Sesame oil: a look back at a seed that has been used for over 5,000 years

Sesamum indicum, or Sesamum orientale, is a member of the Pedaliaceae botanical family. The precise origin of sesame remains somewhat unclear. Traces dating back more than 3,300 years are said to have been found in Mesopotamia. There is also talk of an Indian origin, hence its name "indicum".

It would be more accurate to say that sesame originated in Africa and then spread to Asia. It is one of the oldest cultivated plants, dating back to 2500 BC. Today, sesame is grown mainly in China, India, Central America and the Arabian Gulf.

Sesame oil's main use is in Ayurveda. Where it was used in the composition of pain-relieving remedies.

The sesame oil we offer is light in colour, ranging from pale yellow to golden yellow. It has a very fluid texture, making it a cosmetic that penetrates the skin easily.

Composition of sesame oil

Sesame oil contains mainly unsaturated fatty acids (palmitic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, etc.).

But also :

- Unsaponifiable matter (sesamine, sesamol, sesaminol) ;

- Vitamin E ;

- Provitamins A and B ;

- Beta-sitosterol ;

- Campesterol

The composition of sesame oil can vary greatly depending on the extraction process. We therefore recommend choosing a 100% natural, cold-pressed, virgin sesame oil. Like our Tameem sesame oil.

Cosmetic sesame oil and edible sesame oil: is there a difference ?

To extract sesame oil, you first need to harvest the capsules containing the sesame seeds. There are two ways of doing this:

- Toast the sesame seeds: the resulting oil will be dark, with a very pronounced aroma. Reminiscent of the delicious aromas of walnuts.

- Leave the seeds white: they will then be cold-pressed without roasting. The sesame oil will be much clearer, with a very light fragrance. This is the method used to obtain sesame oil for cosmetic use.
