An essential drink, zamzam water has many benefits, which we'll take a moment to describe below.
As far as the origin of this blessed water is concerned, you should know that it comes from the holy city of Mecca. Mecca is located just a few metres from the Kaaba. Much consumed during the sacred pilgrimage(Hajj) or an Omra, zamzam water will be beneficial with every sip! According to the authentic texts, this water is the best we can find in the world.
According to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), the Prophet (may the prayers of Allah and His salvation be upon him) said:
"The best water on earth is the water of zamzam (*), which can satiate and heal.
And the worst water on earth is that of the valley of Barhout near Hadramawt, it is like the leg of the locust it flows in the morning and is dry in the evening".
(Reported by Tabarani and authenticated by Sheikh Albani in Sahih Targhib n°1161)
(*) Zamzam water comes from a spring in Mecca near the Ka'ba.
According to Abu Tufayl, 'Abdallah Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said about zamzam water (1): "At the time we called it -the one that satiates- (2) and we found that it helped a lot in feeding families".
(Reported by Abder Razaq and authenticated by Sheikh Albani in the Silsila Sahiha n°2685)
(1) Zamzam water comes from a spring in Mecca near the Ka'ba.
(2) It is mentioned in certain ahadiths of the Messenger of Allah (may the prayers of Allah and His salvation be upon him) that this water is a satiating food.
According to Mujahid: When 'Abdallah Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) received a guest, he would offer him zamzam water. (*)
(Reported by Al Fakihi in Akhbar Mekka n°1118 and authenticated by Sheikh Wasiyou Allah 'Abbas in his work Al Masjid Al Haram Tarikhou Wa Ahkamouh p 497)
(*) Honouring the guest is an obligation because it is authentically reported that the Prophet (PBUH) ordered it.
Thus the fact that 'Abdallah Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) offered zamzam water to his guests shows its great value.
According to 'Ata, 'Abdallah Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) said: "Pray at the prayer place of the pious and drink the drink of the pious".
Someone said to him: "What is the place of prayer of the pious?
'Abdullah Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) said: "Under the gutter (*)".He was asked: And what is the drink of the pious?
'Abdallah Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) said: "Zamzam water".
(Reported by Al Azraqi in Akhbar Mekka n°403 and authenticated by Sheikh Wasiyou Allah 'Abbas in his work Al Masjid Al Haram Tarikhou Wa Ahkamouh p 489)
(*) I.e. under the gutter of the Ka'ba.
This place is in the hijr, inside the low arc-shaped wall that is built near the Ka'ba.
So whoever prays there is like the one who prayed inside the Ka'ba.
In this particular case, eating it "raw" is the best thing. It can be used for ablutions and for cooking, as it is blessed, permitted and pure water.
Precautions for use Zemzem water does not have an expiry date. As a precaution, store it in a cool, well-ventilated place away from light.
