Leaves of Ruta graveolens - figel - السذاب الفيجل

Street. What a funny name for a plant, don't you think? It's also called Rue fétide, Rue des jardins, and its scientific name is Ruta graveolens. By this we mean "strong-smelling street". Well, it's true that it's not much to sell on paper.

And yet, this small shrub has been used since Antiquity, and cultivated for its aromatic herbs. But also for its medicinal properties. In fact, it is widely recommended in aromatherapy.

Discover these rue leaves, reputed to relieve stress and anxiety.

Rue officinale, a very special herb

Rue, or Figel, is a herbaceous plant native to southern Europe. It is now found throughout Europe and North Africa.

This shrub has a strong odour, and is often planted to ward off insects and other pests.

The herb of grace has endured through the ages, and has been used in all sorts of ways: as a medicine against the plague, as an aromatic plant, as a flavouring for alcohol, as an oil used in perfumery, and even as a "love filter". It was even banned in 1921 because of its abortifacient properties. This is no longer the case, of course.

The benefits of rue leaves

Rue leaves have many virtues. And although its image as a plant that was used for abortions is still sometimes lacking, Rue officinale is quite incredible:

  • Its antispasmodic properties make it ideal for treating abdominal cramps. It relieves diarrhoea and colic;

  • Ruta graveolens leaves are valued for their digestive benefits. Flatulence, bloating, indigestion and heartburn are no match for this plant;

  • Known as a sedative plant, it soothes nervousness and anxiety ;

  • Like cherry stems, these leaves help with weight loss and water retention;

  • It promotes good blood circulation and makes the arteries more tonic. Rue is therefore effective against varicose veins and oedema.

How should it be used?

Figel leaves are used as an infusion. Use the following ratio: 12 leaves to 1 litre of water.

Simply boil the water and add the leaves. Leave to infuse for 10 minutes, then strain. Drink a maximum of 2 cups a day.

Sweeten with a teaspoon of the excellent jujube honey.
