Loofa comes from the Cucurbitaceae family. In other words, a natural cucumber found mainly in Egypt.
This unusual object may mean nothing to you. And yet it could come in handy in your everyday life! It's a real sponge made from natural fibres. It can be used to scrub your house... or your own body! Needless to say, we recommend that you use two separate sponges if you want to do both..
The loofa, a sponge unlike any other
It is also known as Luffa aegyptiaca. The fruit is harvested when ripe, and emptied to leave only the fibres. It can then be cut into pieces to give it a softer texture. With tightened fibres. And a rougher side, with more widely-spaced fibres.
Loufa is then used as a kitchen sponge, or to wash all sorts of surfaces.
But it can also be used in place of the famous horsehair glove. Only much softer.
What are its benefits and advantages?
This natural sponge has a number of advantages:
- It is environmentally friendly;
- Very economical;
- It is 100% biodegradable;
- Healthyfor our bodies.
The loofah also has some interesting benefits:
- It lathers the soap better, so you use less. Savings guaranteed!
- The loofah acts like a kessa glove, gently exfoliating the skin. It can also be used with black soap for an effective oriental scrub
- This natural sponge removes dead skin and impurities
- Makes skin soft and smooth
How do I use it?
For cleaning
As a sponge for your household, loufa can be used for washing up! Simply run it under water to make it soft. Then add a few drops of washing-up liquid.
Skin care
If you want to use it as a natural cosmetic accessory, run it under water to soften it. Then use a liquid soap, such as liquid Aleppo soap. You can also use a solid bar of soap. Like the sublime argan oil and rose petals soap. For gentle body care!
If you want to gently exfoliate your body, use circular movements. Start at the bottom of the body and work your way up to the stomach. This will tend to improve blood circulation.
Finally, remember to moisturise well. With delicate shea butter, for example.
Loofah care
To look after your natural loufa sponge as well as possible, wring it out after each use. Rinse well. Then dry it in a dry place.
