Ghassoul / rhassoul / clay / rassoul

Ghassoul, also known as rhassoul, is a special clay used in Morocco and Tunisia.

A purifying powder

Aclay of volcanic origin traditionally used in hammam-related cultures, rhassoul powder is combined withargan oil. Thicker-grained than traditional clay powders, it is ideal for body scrubs. It also naturally retains fats and impurities, making it ideal for cleansing oily skin and hair.

Where does rhassoul come from?

Originating mainly in Morocco, the word 'ghassoul' means to wash, as this clay contains cleansing foaming agents. It can be used to cleanse the body and hair, and as a purifying mask, even around the eyes. It's suitable for all skin types: oily, dry, combination, normal - it's a bit of a one-size-fits-all clay. It captures all the impurities linked to sebum, especially blackheads. It deeply cleanses the skin without irritating it.

It's also particularly good for the hair: it doesn't attack the hair's protective sheath. As we saw earlier, by absorbing sebum, it will be an ally of choice for oily hair.

How do I use it?

For your face, use rhassoul powder as a mask.

Recipe:

2 tablespoons rhassoul powder

mineral water

Mix the rhassoul with the water until you obtain a paste that is neither too liquid nor too solid, ideally the same consistency as mud, which will not run down your face. Caution: avoid mixing the mixture in an iron container, preferring a wooden one, for example, so as not to alter its properties. Apply all over the face (paying particular attention to the eyes) and leave on for 20 to 30 minutes. Rinse with clean water and you can finish your usual facial care routine.

Rhassoul is known as the "skin blotter", and will act on your skin as a whole, leaving it free of excess sebum. It purifies and tightens pores. Generally speaking, clays are not used around the eyes. This is not the case with rhassoul, which can be used on this area where the skin is fine and fragile without any problem.

What about hair?

As we saw above, volcanic clay is also a precious ally for your hair. Whether it's oily, normal, with an irritated scalp, or even with dandruff, its use will be adequate.

Ingredients:

3 tbsp. rhassoul

Mineral water

Argan oil or grapeseed oil

In a wooden or clay bowl, using a wooden spoon (don't forget, ghassoul doesn't like to be used with iron utensils, it loses its properties), mix the powder, oils and mineral water until you obtain a muddy consistency, neither too liquid nor too solid (we trust you).

Apply the paste to your scalp and ends. You can dampen the paste as you apply it. Don't hesitate to emulsify your scalp with the mixture. Leave on for 5 minutes, like a conditioner or classic mask, then rinse.

Be careful not to leave on for longer than this, as the clay can be hard to rinse out of the hair. You can also add a classic conditioner to the mixture to make rinsing easier, it's up to you!

Storage

Rhassoul powder should be kept in a dry, well-ventilated place, away from light and sources of heat.

Be careful not to use it with iron accessories such as spoons, pots or bowls, as these will cause the clay to lose some or all of its properties.
